Damage to Porous Materials

Materials considered to be porous can be damaged once exposed to water. Carpets and pads, flooring made out of hardwood, drywall and wall insulation can all be affected. Additional problems such as plumbing malfunctions, accidental leaks and other natural causes can also lead to serious water damage. If not promptly treated by a certified professional, significant loss of personal belongings and possessions is probable with water damage.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF WATER DAMAGE

Clean, gray or black water intrusion, each pose their own challenges for the homeowner. Mold can begin appearing and growing in as little as 24-48 hours.

Clean water which typically comes from a burst pipe is not as dangerous as grey or black water, but should be remediated as soon as possible to mitigate further and costly damage to a property. Respiratory illnesses and allergic reactions may be the result of unattended mold.

Black water is highly unsanitary and close contact with it can cause exposure to bacteria, viruses and fungi which live in said water. Black water comes from raw sewage, flooded streams, drain pipes and standing water.

Gray water is also hazardous to health and home, as it contains many contaminants which can cause various illnesses due to exposure. Gray water is found in water toilets, dishwashers, washing machines and exterior ground water.
